Citi to Qatar Avios: The Up-to-35% Transfer Bonus, and the Tiered Math Most People Will Get Wrong (October 2026 Guide)

If you hold a stash of Citi ThankYou points, this month is the best time in a long while to think about Qatar Airways. Through October 31, Qatar is adding up to 35% bonus Avios when you convert points from Citi.

The headline is real, and the structure underneath it decides how much of it you actually get. This is a tiered bonus: 15%, 25%, or 35%, decided entirely by how much you move in a single transaction. A 49,999-Avios transfer earns 15%. A 100,000-Avios transfer earns 35%. The window and the partner are identical; the only variable is how much you move at once.

Here is how the tiers actually count, the exact math on a QSuites business-class seat to Doha, the five steps to do it safely, and the timing trap that could wreck the whole plan, including the part about when the bonus Avios actually post.

TL;DR

One transfer Bonus What it means
Up to 49,999 Avios 15% The default most people land in
50,000 to 99,999 Avios 25% Worth planning around
100,000+ Avios 35% 100,000 points become 135,000 Avios

Bonus calculated per transaction, not on cumulative transfers. Premium Citi cards transfer 1:1 to Qatar; no-fee Citi cards transfer 1:0.7.

The short version: from October 1 through October 31, 2026 (Qatar time, GMT+3), Qatar Airways Privilege Club adds bonus Avios on conversions from Citi ThankYou points. The bonus is 15% on a single transfer of up to 49,999 Avios, 25% on 50,000 to 99,999, and 35% on 100,000 or more. The bonus Avios post by November 30, not instantly. That last sentence is the one most coverage will bury.

What actually changed (and what did not)

Some headlines will frame this as a new partnership. It is not. Citi ThankYou points have transferred to Qatar Airways Privilege Club for years. What is new is the tiered bonus structure, and it is Qatar running the promotion, not Citi.

The practical consequence: the bonus will not show up in Citi’s transfer portal. It is Qatar’s promotion, so it lives on Qatar’s side. The bonus Avios land in your Privilege Club account separately, and the terms say

Qatar Airways Privilege Club promotion: up to 35% bonus Avios on Citi ThankYou transfers, October 2026

by November 30, 2026.

The window runs October 1, 00:00 through October 31, 23:59, Qatar time (GMT+3). That is October 31 at 4:59 PM Eastern. If you are planning around the deadline, do not cut it close, because Citi-to-Qatar transfers can take up to 24 hours to complete.

Minimum transfer is 1,000 points, in increments of 1,000.

A point worth being honest about, because it trips people up: the tiers count Avios per individual transaction, not points, and not your monthly total. Qatar calculates the bonus on each conversion on its own. Accumulated transactions do not qualify. So two transfers of 50,000 get you the 25% tier twice. One transfer of 100,000 gets you 35%. Consolidate.

The tier math, by card

Not all Citi cards transfer at the same rate, and that changes which tier you can reach. Citi runs two tiers of its own: the premium cards (Strata Elite, Strata Premier, Prestige, AT&T Access More) transfer to Qatar at 1:1, while the no-fee cards (ThankYou Preferred, Strata, Double Cash, Custom Cash, ThankYou Mastercard and the other listed cards) transfer at 1:0.7.

Qatar’s bonus tiers count the Avios that land in a single transaction. So the number of points you must move to hit the 35% tier depends on your card:

To reach 35% tier Points to move Avios you get
Premium cards (1:1) 100,000 135,000
No-fee cards (1:0.7) 143,000 135,135

At 1:0.7, 143,000 points convert to 100,100 Avios, clearing the 100,000-Avios threshold for 35%. Check your own card’s ratio in your ThankYou account before moving anything.

If you hold a no-fee Citi card and want the top tier, you need to move more points to clear the same 100,000-Avios threshold. The effective math still works out to roughly 1:0.945 per point at the top tier, versus 1:1.35 on a premium card. Know which card you hold before you do anything.

The worked example: a QSuites seat to Doha

Numbers are only useful against a real seat. Qatar prices its own QSuites business class from New York (JFK) to Doha at 70,000 Avios one-way at off-peak saver pricing. Peak dates price at 140,000 Avios, double. Taxes and fees run in the $60 to $237 range depending on the date.

Here is what the same seat costs in Citi points at each bonus tier, assuming a premium card at 1:1. Divide 70,000 by 1 plus the bonus:

  • At 35%: 70,000 divided by 1.35 = 51,852 points. Call it 51,900 Citi points for a QSuites seat.
  • At 25%: 70,000 divided by 1.25 = 56,000 Citi points.
  • At 15%: 70,000 divided by 1.15 = 60,870 Citi points.
  • No bonus: 70,000 Citi points.

The gap between the 15% and 35% tier is about 9,000 points on one seat, 18,000 on two. That gap is the entire reason to consolidate your transfer.

Item Amount
QSuites JFK to Doha, off-peak saver 70,000 Avios
Citi points needed at the 35% tier (premium card) ~51,900 points
Taxes and fees (vary by date) $60 to $237
One-way out of pocket at the top tier ~51,900 points + $60-$237

One important caveat on the example: that 70,000-Avios price is off-peak saver pricing, which is an illustration of what the tier math buys you. Availability moves daily, and if your dates price at peak you are looking at 140,000 Avios regardless of the bonus. Find the seat on your dates first. Then transfer.

The QSuites Masterclass

The bonus math is the easy part. Finding QSuites award space and booking it without mistakes is where most people get stuck. My QSuites masterclass covers the full playbook: which points to earn for Qatar, how to find QSuites award availability, and exactly how to book it. It is available to Premium members inside the Club on Skool.

How to do it in five steps

  1. Price your seat first. Log into Qatar Airways Privilege Club, search your route and dates, and confirm the Avios price you will actually pay. Note whether your dates price at off-peak or peak.
  2. Confirm your card’s ratio. Open your Citi ThankYou account and check what your specific card transfers to Qatar at: 1:1 on the premium cards, 1:0.7 on the no-fee cards. Work out how many points you need to move to land in the tier you want.
  3. Plan one consolidated transfer. Since the bonus is per transaction, one transfer of 100,000 Avios beats two transfers of 50,000 every time. Do the math for your whole party before you start.
  4. Transfer inside the window. Move the points in your ThankYou account by October 31 (Qatar time). Transfers can take up to 24 hours, so leave a buffer at the deadline.
  5. Book with the base Avios, and treat the bonus as a refill. The bonus Avios arrive by November 30, so they are a top-up for your next trip, not part of this booking’s budget.

The honest caveats

The November 30 posting date is the big one. Qatar’s terms say the bonus Avios will be credited by November 30, 2026. They are not instant. If you need the bonus Avios to complete a booking this week, do not transfer. This bonus is a reward for moving points you were going to move anyway, not a tool for an urgent redemption.

Then there is the per-transaction rule. It rewards consolidation, but it also means a second small transfer later in the month restarts at 15%. If your balance will not reach 100,000 Avios in one go, be honest about which tier you are really in before you decide the bonus is worth chasing.

The off-peak pricing in the example is the best case. Peak dates double the Avios price to 140,000, and the bonus does not change that ratio. A 35% bonus on a peak-priced seat is still a peak-priced seat.

And transfers are one-way. Once ThankYou points become Avios, they stay Avios. Do not move points on the strength of the bonus alone. Move them because you have a redemption in mind and the dates price out.

One more practical note: since this promotion is Qatar’s, not Citi’s, you will not see the bonus mentioned in your ThankYou portal. That is normal. The bonus is real even if your Citi account does not advertise it.

My take

This is one of the better Citi-to-Qatar bonuses I have seen, and the top tier is genuinely good value: 1:1.35 on a premium card toward one of the best business-class products in the world.

The honest caveat is the same as it always is with transfer bonuses. The bonus is not the deal. The bookable seat is. If you have 100,000 or more Citi points, a premium card, and Qatar dates that price at off-peak, move the full amount in one transfer and pocket the 35%. If you are sitting at 30,000 points with no redemption in mind, the 15% tier is not a reason to manufacture one. Points in a flexible program are worth more than a small bonus on a speculative transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Citi to Qatar a new transfer partnership?

No. Citi ThankYou points have transferred to Qatar Airways Privilege Club for years. What is new is only this tiered bonus: 15%, 25%, or 35% depending on the size of a single transfer, running October 1 through 31, 2026. This is a bonus on an existing partner.

When do the bonus Avios actually post?

Qatar’s terms say the bonus Avios will be credited to your Privilege Club account by November 30, 2026. They do not post with the base transfer. Some coverage notes past Qatar bonuses have posted sooner, but the only date you can plan around is the published one. Do not count on the bonus Avios for a booking you need to make this month.

Do I need 100,000 Citi points to get the 35% bonus?

Not exactly. The tiers count Avios in a single transaction, and your card’s ratio decides how many points that takes. With a premium Citi card at 1:1, 100,000 points become 100,000 Avios, which clears the top tier. With a no-fee card at 1:0.7, you need to move about 143,000 points to land 100,100 Avios and hit the same tier. Check your own ratio first.

Can I split one big transfer into two smaller ones to reach the top tier?

No, and this is the mistake to avoid. The bonus is calculated per transaction, not on your cumulative monthly transfers. Two transfers of 50,000 Avios earn the 25% tier twice. One transfer of 100,000 Avios earns 35%. If you want the top tier, consolidate into a single transaction.

What is the best use of Qatar Avios right now?

Qatar’s own flights price the best, and off-peak QSuites business class is the standout: 70,000 Avios one-way from the US East Coast to Doha at saver pricing, with modest taxes and fees. Always check whether your dates price at off-peak or peak before transferring, since peak pricing doubles the cost and the bonus will not save you from that.

The Bottom Line

A tiered 15/25/35% bonus on Citi to Qatar transfers through October 31, with the top tier turning 100,000 Citi points into 135,000 Avios on a premium card. That is about 51,900 points for an off-peak QSuites seat to Doha. Consolidate into one transfer, confirm your card’s ratio, find the seat first, and plan around the November 30 bonus posting date.
