Business class to Madrid for about 33,750 Capital One miles.
Capital One is handing out 20% more Avios on transfers to British Airways, and the window closes October 31, 2026. One thousand miles become 1,200 Avios. The date is settled: British Airways’ own partner terms say 11:59 p.m. ET on October 31, and I confirmed the same date on my own transfer screen.
Here is the part most coverage skips. The worst place to spend those Avios is British Airways itself. A one-way business seat on BA metal can carry over $500 in carrier-imposed surcharges, on top of the Avios. The points are not the problem. The airline you spend them on is.
Avios move 1:1, free, between British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar, and Finnair. The bonus only applies on the Capital One to British Airways leg, so the move is simple: take the bonus at BA, then send the Avios wherever they price best. Here is the bonus, why BA is the worst place to spend it, where the Avios are strongest, and the exact math, including the one rule that can lock you out of the best play entirely.

TL;DR
Capital One miles transfer to British Airways Avios with a 20% bonus through October 31, 2026. The normal 1:1 rate becomes 1,000 miles to 1,200 Avios. Take the bonus, then move the Avios 1:1 for free to Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar, or Finnair, because spending them with British Airways on long haul means paying the surcharges that give Avios their bad reputation.

The three plays worth your attention:
- Iberia business class, US East Coast to Madrid, 40,500 Avios off-peak one-way. With the bonus, that is 33,750 Capital One miles.
- Qatar QSuites, New York to Doha, 70,000 Avios off-peak one-way plus about $60 to $237 in taxes. With the bonus, that is about 58,400 Capital One miles.
- Short American Airlines hops, where the Avios price often beats what American charges for the same seat.
All three are illustrations. Award space moves daily, and the off-peak prices below are starting points, not promises.
What the bonus actually is
British Airways is a standing Capital One transfer partner at 1:1. Nothing about the partnership changed. The new part is the 20% bonus layered on top for October: every 1,000 Capital One miles you move becomes 1,200 Avios instead of 1,000. This is a recurring bonus, roughly once a year, and it is worth treating as a window, not a new relationship.
You need a Capital One card that earns miles and has transfer access, like the Venture or Venture X. You must already be a member of the British Airways Club before you send the miles, so join (free) before you transfer. Capital One may ask for an extra two-step verification on the transfer. Transfers post fast, usually instantly, and they are final. There is no sending them back to Capital One.
Why Avios have a bad reputation (and why it is deserved)
British Airways is notorious for carrier-imposed surcharges on its own long-haul awards, and the reputation is earned. One published breakdown had a one-way West Coast to London business award at 99,000 Avios plus $508 out of pocket. Another put a one-way business award’s fuel surcharge alone at $650. Round trips routinely top $1,000 in added fees before you count the Avios.
So when people say Avios are useless, they are usually describing a BA-metal long-haul redemption. They paid a mountain of cash for a “free” ticket and blamed the currency.
There is a second wrinkle worth knowing. British Airways moved its own-metal awards to fully dynamic pricing in December 2025, so there is no fixed chart to reference for BA flights anymore. The fixed prices in this post are for Iberia and Qatar metal, booked through their own programs. That is exactly where you want to be.
The rule: move the Avios, don’t book with BA
Five airlines use Avios as their currency: British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar, and Finnair. Avios move between them 1:1 and free through the Combine My Avios tool. That is the whole trick. The 20% bonus only applies on the Capital One to British Airways leg, so you collect the bonus at BA and then send the Avios to whichever program prices your route best.
The Madrid play runs through Iberia Plus, which prices its own metal by distance and discounts off-peak dates. The Doha play runs through Qatar Privilege Club, which prices QSuites at 70,000 Avios off-peak one-way from the US. Booking the same Iberia flight on ba.com instead of iberia.com can cost you more Avios and the same surcharges, so always book Iberia metal on iberia.com.
One honest warning before you get excited about Madrid. Iberia Plus will not let you combine Avios into a fresh account. The account must be at least 90 days old and have at least 1 Avios earned directly in the program, through a flight, a hotel transfer, or a small bank transfer. Moving Avios in from BA does not count as earning. If you do not have an Iberia Plus account that already meets the rule, the Madrid play cannot happen before this bonus ends. Open the account today and get 1 Avios into it anyway, because the clock only starts when you do, and the Avios family moves work year-round.
The math: what the bonus buys you
Here is the table that matters. Divide the Avios price by 1.2 to get the Capital One cost with the bonus, then round up to the 100-mile transfer increment.
| Award | Avios price | CapOne, no bonus | CapOne, with 20% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iberia business, East Coast to Madrid, off-peak | 40,500 | 40,500 | 33,750 |
| Qatar QSuites, New York to Doha, off-peak | 70,000 | 70,000 | 58,400 |
With-bonus figures rounded up to Capital One’s 100-mile transfer increments (58,400 miles yields 70,080 Avios). Taxes and fees are cash on top. Off-peak dates are limited.
A few notes on what those rows mean in practice.
Iberia’s 40,500 is the off-peak Band 5 price for New York (JFK), Boston, and Chicago to Madrid, one-way in business. Peak dates price higher, at 59,000. Miami and Los Angeles sit in Band 6, so they price at 50,500 off-peak. Surcharges on Iberia metal run roughly 100 to 150 euros each way, a fraction of BA’s. A round trip at the off-peak rate is 81,000 Avios, which the bonus turns into 67,500 Capital One miles. One published comparison priced the round-trip cash fare on this route near $2,940, which puts the award near 3.3 cents per Avios against that fare. That is an illustration on one route, not a guarantee on yours.
Qatar’s 70,000 is the off-peak saver price for QSuites from New York to Doha, one-way. Peak dates double to 140,000, and that doubling is the single most expensive mistake in this post. Taxes run about $60 to $237 depending on the date. Check the seat map before you get attached: not every Qatar flight to the US is Qsuite-equipped, and the hardware is part of the deal.
The third play is quieter. Short American Airlines hops priced with Avios often beat what American charges for the same seat, because BA prices each segment separately and short nonstops are cheap. Stick to nonstops, because connecting itineraries price each leg on its own and the math falls apart fast. Price your exact route on ba.com before you move anything.
How to do this, step by step
- Join the British Airways Club first. It is free, and Capital One requires you to be a member before the transfer will go through. Do this today even if you are still deciding, because it costs nothing and removes one failure point.
- Check your Iberia Plus account’s age. If Madrid is the goal, the account needs to be 90+ days old with at least 1 Avios earned directly, or the Avios cannot move there. New account? Open one now and earn 1 Avios (a small hotel-points transfer works) so the countdown starts.
- Price the seat on your dates first. Use iberia.com for Iberia (look for the green off-peak dates on the calendar) and qatarairways.com for QSuites. The 40,500 and 70,000 figures are off-peak illustrations. If your dates price at peak, the answer changes.
- Transfer only what the seat needs. Move Capital One miles to BA in 100-mile increments, starting at 1,000. The transfer is one-way and final, so never move points speculatively. Seat first, transfer second.
- Combine the Avios 1:1 (free) to the program you are booking with, then book there. Book Iberia flights on iberia.com, Qatar flights on qatarairways.com. Do not book them on ba.com.
The honest caveats
Off-peak dates are limited, and that is the catch behind every number in this post. Iberia’s green off-peak dates are the cheapest seats in the system, which means they go first. Qatar’s off-peak saver space is capacity-controlled too. If your dates only show peak pricing, the bonus still helps, but the math is a different conversation.
The 90-day Iberia rule is the biggest trap. It is the one detail that turns a great plan into a dead end on October 30, when there is no time left to fix it. Check the account today, not the day you find the seat.
The bonus applies only to the Capital One to British Airways leg. You cannot transfer Capital One miles directly to Iberia or Qatar and get the 20%. The free 1:1 combine step is what makes the whole play work, and it is also the step people forget to check.
Surcharges are the same with the bonus or without it. Iberia’s roughly 100 to 150 euros each way and Qatar’s $60 to $237 are cash you pay regardless. The bonus saves you miles, not money.
And a point worth being honest about, because it trips people up: the “don’t spend with BA” rule is about long haul. BA’s short-haul Reward Flight Saver pricing is a different product with fixed low cash fees, and it is genuinely good. That is just not what this bonus is for.
My take
This is a transfer window, not a reason to hoard Avios. If you have dates in mind and a seat priced on iberia.com or qatarairways.com, move the miles this week and take the 20%. The Iberia play is the best business-class-to-Europe deal in the Avios family right now, and the Qatar play is the answer for the Middle East and onward to Asia.
Move points for a priced seat, not because 20% sounds good. Avios expire after 36 months of inactivity in both the British Airways and Qatar programs, and a bonus in an account you never use is just a faster clock. The discipline is the same as every transfer bonus: find the seat, then move the miles. Never the reverse.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a new partnership between Capital One and British Airways?
No. British Airways is a standing Capital One transfer partner at the normal 1:1 rate. The 20% bonus is the new part, and it runs through October 31, 2026. It is a recurring bonus, roughly once a year, so if you miss it, a similar window will likely come back.
When exactly does the bonus end?
October 31, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET, per British Airways’ partner terms. The offer started at 12:00 a.m. ET on October 1. Initiate the transfer before the cutoff, and the bonus Avios post with the transfer, usually instantly.
Can I transfer Capital One miles straight to Iberia or Qatar and still get the 20%?
No. The bonus only applies to transfers into British Airways. From there, Avios move 1:1 and free to Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar, and Finnair through the Combine My Avios tool. That free second hop is the entire strategy.
My Iberia Plus account is new. Am I locked out of the Madrid play?
For this bonus window, yes, if the account is under 90 days old or has never earned an Avios directly. Open the account now and earn 1 Avios (a small hotel-points transfer counts) so the 90-day clock starts. In the meantime, the Qatar and Aer Lingus plays do not have the same restriction, and the 1:1 Avios moves work year-round.
Do Avios expire?
Yes. Both the British Airways Club and Qatar Privilege Club expire Avios after 36 months without account activity, and any activity resets the clock. That is one more reason not to move points speculatively: only transfer for a seat you have priced. (My full guide to every expiry rule covers all the programs.)
Bottom Line
Take the bonus at British Airways and spend it anywhere but. Iberia business class to Madrid at 40,500 Avios off-peak is the move for Europe, QSuites to Doha at 70,000 is the move for the Middle East, and both get meaningfully cheaper in Capital One miles through October 31. Find the seat first, move only what you need, and check your Iberia account’s age before you count on Madrid.
That’s the deal: the bonus is real, the date is settled, and the best Avios seat is the one you priced before moving a single mile.
